Sier Design
David Sier Design is built on a simple idea: creating functional objects that balance structure, material, and form. What began as a series of lampshade concepts has grown into a broader exploration of handcrafted wooden design.
Today, the work spans lighting, furniture, and custom pieces — from sculptural lamps to tables, chairs, and even the occasional small boat.
Inspiration & Process
With a background as an aircraft engineer, David's approach is informed by technical precision. The geometric perfection of 747 and 777 engines—their symmetry and flow—found a new expression in the natural, often unpredictable grain of wood.
This duality of rigid engineering and fluid nature defines every piece that leaves the workshop.

Craft & Construction
Every piece begins as raw timber and is carefully shaped, assembled, and refined by hand.

No two pieces are exactly the same. Subtle variations in grain, tone, and finish give each object its own character. This is the wabi-sabi of wood—finding perfection in the unique flaws and textures of every plank.
From Lampshades to Living Spaces
The design language that started with an exploration of light has naturally evolved. What once captured a glow now supports a coffee cup or provides a seat. This architectural signature—built on repetition and structural honesty—extends across lighting, tables, seating, and custom-built interior feature pieces.

A Sense of Place
Many pieces are named after towns and regions across New Zealand, reflecting places that have shaped David’s journey over the years — particularly in Northland and the Bay of Plenty.
These names ground each design in memory and experience, adding another layer of meaning to the work beyond its physical form.
Looking Ahead
The evolution continues. Every new piece is an exploration-a chance to push the boundaries of wood as a medium and discover new ways it can serve our daily lives. The workshop is a space of constant questioning: how can we make this lighter? Stronger? More resonant?
